The Next Morning - A Saturday in August

Awake at the first light of day, I open my eyes. Julia is still sleeping. I find her tucked in the hollow of my arms, her silky hair caressing my chest. Our bodies are one, and still, nothing yet has happened between us. I remain a while breathing it in, not daring to move. Her sweet perfume floats in the air and blesses me with confused memories. A feeling of déjà vu is slowly creeping into me. It seems to me that I've already lived through this moment, that I already know this woman.

It's a frustrating feeling not being able to understand what's happening to me. No woman before Julia has ever made me feel like I belonged. Here. In her arms. With her by my side, no more nightmares came to haunt me. I didn't sleep with her. Not yet. Maybe we'll get that started tonight or tomorrow. But until that is, indeed, the situation and I can honor my contract, I will have to take the necessary distance to avoid any attachment.

I can't afford to fall in love with her. Not now that I've shown up in all my ugliness. Everything would be easier if I hadn't had the weakness to tell her in detail how my parents died. That's the entire story of my life. I'm just a loser who fails at everything he sets out to do.

From the time I was a child that reputation stuck with me. I wasn't very bright in school. Mathematics was a thorn in my side. My father blamed me for my continuous underwhelming activity. It wasn't until after his death that a doctor diagnosed me with dyslexia. It took many sessions with a speech therapist to treat me, but that didn't eradicate my problem. Even today, I still have to make a second count of my change or a simple calculation. It's not uncommon for me to invert the digits of a phone number.

All the same, I still managed to get an education and a stable, well-paying job at Bombarder. But I had to resign under the pretext that it was deadly boring. So I founded a communication consultancy that is not working. Wishing to get out of the rut, I tried to make some money playing the male escort.
